The next generation of the BMW X1 is migrating to an all new front-wheel drive platform and the German company is already out testing the new setup.
The new front-drive platform, internally known as F48, is also going to underpin the latest version of the Mini Cooper, along with the new BMW 1 Series and 1 Series GT. In the X1’s case, the vehicle will be able to offer more interior space thanks to the front-drive platform along with reduced production costs resulting from platform sharing. Like its competitors, the X1 will offer an all-wheel drive variant.
From the photos, we see that the styling on the new X1 is staying mostly stagnant, with the front end receiving a minor facelift that mimics the looks of the new 3 Series.
The X1 is expected to debut in September of 2015 as a 2016 model year vehicle.
